Communication for Rural Development in India: An Overview
"The soul of India lives in its villages", declared Gandhi at the beginning of 20th century. The development of the county depends on its rural advancement. Communication plays a vital role in the development of every society. It is a complex process which is closely associated with social, economic, political and cultural structures and processes. Development communication came to the Third World Countries in the 1960s as an important component of their developmental package. Many scholars have studied the role of communication in the process of development. The essence of development communication ideology is crucial for the creation of a new society on the basis of social justice. Communication is, indeed, a major developmental resource in the process of sustainable rural development in India. A new upward movement for development has emerged with the decentralization of democratic system in the country. The current article provides an overview of the communication for sustainable rural development in India.
